C-section births raise significant risk of blood clots

Women undergo many physiological changes during pregnancy. This makes the pregnant women more vulnerable to fluctuations in the blood flow forming blood clots easily, slower physical movement, and compression in veins, or venous thromboembolism.

During pregnancy, the blockage in blood flow forms dangerous blood clots in the veins. This is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The consequences of a DVT are severe. The highest number of maternal deaths is caused by venous thromboembolism. The condition of thromboembolism can be fatal because organs inside the body are damaged by blood clots.

Pregnancy is not the only risk factor of developing DVT. If you are obese or if you have a history of blood clotting, high blood pressure, or if you smoke, these factors also put you at risk.

If you’ve had a C-section before, then this risk of developing blood clots is even higher during your next pregnancy.

The new guidelines published in the issue of obstetrics and gynaecology explains this in detail. To fight the risk of blood clots during a C-section, doctor now recommend that all women going under the knife must wear inflatable devices on their legs. These devices are worn during the operation. This is one of the most cost-effective prevention methods. It is also a safe method for women to adopt. Devices are left on the legs until the women are able to walk again after the procedure. This recommendation comes from a leading obstetricians’ group.

Another recommendation is to administer anticoagulant medicine to the women undergoing the delivery.

To help reduce the number of maternal deaths or the deaths of women right after childbirth, it is imperative that obstetricians and gynaecologists embrace these recommendations.
