What is Binge Eating & Is It Dangerous?

Binge eating is an eating disorder associated with frequently eating an unusually high amount of food and feeling unable to stop even one gets uncomfortably full.

More often than not, people with binge eating disorder become overweight and obese because they do not usually resort to behaviors such as induced vomiting or over exercising to compensate for their eating.

What causes binge eating?

The specific cause of binge eating is not yet known. There are a number of factors that are known to contribute to its development that may include;

  • Socio-cultural factors: Social pressures as propagated by the media, celebrities and peers to maintain a certain body shape and weight could push some people into emotional eating.
  • Biological factors: Hormonal irregularities can sometimes be associated with cases of food addiction, overeating, and compulsive eating. Genetic mutations could also be a reason for some of these triggers.
  • Psychological factors: Past traumatic events/happenings such as a history of sexual abuse could trigger emotional eating. Mental conditions such as depression are also known to push some people into a binge eating disorder. Low self-esteem and just a general bodily dissatisfaction could also contribute to binge eating.

Is binge eating dangerous?

People suffering from binge eating disorder end up battling with emotionally related psychological problems. Feelings of guilt and disgust are prone to crop up over time. These can bring with them mental conditions like depression and anxiety.

Such feelings leave them with no means to find relief and so most will again turn to binge eating as a coping mechanism. This loss of self-control creates a harmful vicious cycle that is usually difficult to bring to a halt.

Binge eating disorder is also associated with other health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, gall bladder disease, insomnia, type 2 diabetes and joint pains. Nonetheless, studies have proven that it is an eating disorder and one should seek professional help before it gets out of hand.
